{My transparencies in process}

Meredith Stern invited me to be a part of her THIS IS AN EMERGENCY Gender Justice portfolio (more info below). In the spirit of sisterhood I invited Emmy Bright to collaborate with me. Before we started on our separate prints, Emmy and I spent some time talking about what we valued about feminism and what activism meant to us. I drew on a lot of texts I read in my early 20's and Emmy brought along some of her favorite dog-eared books, we found new meaning in the well worn words.

We were lucky enough to draw on the kindness of a fabulous Providence art organization to donate time and resources for the printing of the editions.
New Urban Arts, a nationally recognized interdisciplinary arts studio for high school students and emerging artists in Providence, Rhode Island--- let me and Emmy Bright print in their printshop. Emmy and I carved out a few Fridays to print like mad before the high school participants showed up after school to claim their shop back. Here are some shots of the mayhem.
And since I decided to start with a large blend I used a lot of ink as well.

Here is Meredith Stern's statement about the portfolio.

Reproductive Rights and gender justice are in a state of emergency right now. This past year we witnessed the near defunding of Planned Parenthood in Congress and from Komen, one of their largest private funders. In 2011 alone, a historic 80 new laws were passed which further prevent people from accessing abortions. Also this past year, over 200 transgendered people were murdered. And currently more than half the states in the US have passed amendments that prevent the recognition of same sex marriages.

In response to all the bullying, the legislative measures, and the horrifying statements filling the media, I feel that we need a collection of voices commenting on this situation through visual art. This project will bring together over a dozen voices from people most affected by these issues- women, queer identified, and transgendered artists.

Over a dozen artists have already confirmed to create a print for this project and an artist will be printing the covers. Artists who have confirmed are: several members of Justseeds Cooperative including: Melanie Cervantes, Thea Gahr, Bec Young, Favianna Rodriguez, Mary Tremonte, Molly Fair, and myself (Meredith Stern). Also participating are: Ian Cozzens of Secret Door Projects, Kristina Brown, Delia Kovac, Emmy Bright, Lois Harada, Olivia Horvath, Sam Merritt, and Katrina Avocado. Arley Rose and Morgan Calderini, of Ladyfingers Letterpress, will be designing and printing the portfolio covers. Each artist will be creating and hand printing their own image.Deliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06298199913996745816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1440265256317414942.post-1587898771209976092012-03-20T22:26:00.000-07:002012-03-20T22:26:53.931-07:00KICKSTARTER: This Is An Emergency Portfolio

I was invited by Meredith Stern to participate in THIS IS AN EMERGENCY, a print portfolio which focuses on reproductive rights and gender justice. I will be collaborating with Emmy Bright for THIS IS AN EMERGENCY.

In just over a day the project is almost funded, which is a testament to print collectors and the political climate, but any funds pledged over the amount will be well used. More cash---> more fabulous prints.

Thank for your support.
So I decided yesterday to start an inter-generational punk rock history book club.
if you wanna get in on the ground floor and watch me struggle with facilitating really grumpy opinionated people via skype click here.
and if you arn't on the evil facebook.
email me.

But really I just want to gather a group together in Providence with Girls Rock! RI to talk about music culture.

FYI-The amazingly talented Erin Kilkenny made that logo in a heartbeat.
making this idea all too real.
The ski mask is often the uniform of aggression that prefers to remain anonymous — muggers, stick-up men, covert operators, insurgent fighters, death squads. Guys, mostly.

Kovac writes that the series of ski-masked heads in her exhibit "Comfortable Distance" at Craftland (235 Westminster Street, Providence, through July 16) spring from her "cold Midwestern youth" and thoughts about "contemporary unease regarding the social face of women." So for her, the paintings — with their sleepy eyes or freaked-out bug eyes and teeth — seem to be about female beauty. But I keep thinking about what it means for women to put on the mask usually associated with male aggression. Also here is a pair of giant ski masks that Kovac has knit. They're perhaps twice the size of normal, which turns them buffoonish, undercutting what might be menace.

Kovac's technique is driven by a love of stylized pattern — painting lots of dots or dashes or rings to indicate knit texture. And this is part of the charm of pencil drawings like Holding Pattern, which seems to depict a pair of guinea pigs or lemmings facing each other, belly to belly, with their long tongues stretched out and about to touch. It's an alluringly weird, tender gesture, made more charming by Kovac's cartoony line and the fact that she has lovingly drawn each little strand of fur.

Elsewhere this love of expression is the main focus of pencil-and-ink drawings like Loss + Fury, in which a bundle of curved marks add up to a sort of cloud of hair.

Her Social Structures ink drawings are a suite of studies of simplified, stylized brick fortress walls. Kovac says their inspiration came from Renaissance paintings of ideal cities, 19th- and 20th-century "feminist utopian narratives," and the Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls. As drawings, they're again animated by the many different ways to caricature patterns of bricks. They depict castle walls or city walls, all empty inside, perhaps abandoned and beginning to be reclaimed by nature. As in many of her drawings and paintings, Kovac somehow imbues these charming, somewhat offhand renderings with a psychological charge. They read like Jungian symbols embodying twin feelings of imprisonment and safety.

-Greg Cook
June 21, 2011
Providence Phoenix

Here is a link to the entire article. Deliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06298199913996745816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1440265256317414942.post-60771047499499319702011-06-27T11:19:00.000-07:002011-06-27T11:24:35.220-07:00Select items from Comfortable Distance available online.
(All I've Ever Wanted, ink on Canvas, 2008)

You can now purchase my work at the Craftland ShopDeliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06298199913996745816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1440265256317414942.post-3768553236878359222011-06-21T11:16:00.000-07:002011-06-21T11:24:52.455-07:00studio clean up<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuhvBpKUofWF-RIMhKek5MyX5ZeJY5bgtK42AMBKu_HZykOEfInkjr5pTv2VCINWmFb7QS6t6xYGUR7AFHGu-hXa6li6Tq8oo3Q6eWlgI3p1vJorKzJhDBM0fuu2zeMvvdRQCnlm-NDhU/s320/DSC00243.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620738975862447458" />

after all the activity prepping for my show at craftland, I am cleaning up my workspace while watching a Project Runway Marathon.
